219. To ask the Minister for Health the number of quangos operating under the aegis of his Department; the total number of directors sitting on their boards; the aggregate fees incurred by the State in paying the remuneration of directors of these quangos; the number of quangos that have been created since the formation of the Government; the number that have been disbanded over the period; the projected cost to the taxpayer of the establishment and operation of these new quangos; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The table below sets out the statutory bodies operating under the aegis of my Department. No new statutory bodies have been established since the formation of this Government.

Three bodies, the National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery, National Social Workers Qualifications Board and the Children Acts Advisory Board have been dissolved since March 2011.

The information requested by the Deputy in relation to fees incurred by the State is not readily available, but I will forward a detailed reply to the Deputy as soon as possible. With regard to board fees, there are three categories currently payable to chairpersons and directors of agencies under the aegis of my Department.. Members of boards entitled to such fees may waive these fees if they so wish. The "one person one salary" principle provides that public servants acting as chairpersons or directors of state-sponsored bodies do not receive additional remuneration for undertaking such duties. Members of boards are also entitled to claim travel and subsistence as governed by the travel and subsistence Circulars issued by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.

The approved annual rates in respect of those boards to which I have made appointments and where board fees are currently payable are:
