70. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the reason a person (details supplied) in County Kerry who has applied for a pension is not being recognised as a secondary teacher in view of the fact that they taught home economics for over 20 years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Pension entitlements for teachers are determined in accordance with the relevant pension scheme. Professional registration of teachers is a separate matter. The Teaching Council is the body with statutory responsibility for the registration of teachers including the recognition of teaching qualifications. Any teacher who wishes to make enquiries regarding his/her registration status should enquire directly with the Council. The Deputy will appreciate that it would not be appropriate for me to intervene in individual cases.
