To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the way he proposes to meet the new EU rules requiring that Irish listed company boards should have 40 per cent female membership by 2020 and by 2018 in the case of State-owned companies in view of the fact that the current average in Ireland is 10.7%, compared to an EU average of 16.6%. The proposed Directive on improving the gender balance among non-executive directors of listed companies is under negotiation at the EU level. As this is an equality measure, the Minister for Justice and Equality leads on the Irish position, with contributions from my Department on the company law aspects of the proposal.

As the negotiations are still at an early stage it is not known what the final provisions and scope of the instrument will be. As a result, it is not possible to say now what will be needed to transpose that instrument once it has been adopted.
