To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the minimum qualification necessary and training required by persons taking up positions as special needs assistants in primary schools; and the assistance available to a person (details supplied) in County Cork in order to have their relevant qualifications accredited. With effect from 01 September 2011 the minimum required standard of education for appointment to the post of Special Needs Assistant is a FETAC level 3 major qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications, a minimum of three grade Ds in the Junior Certificate, or equivalent. The person referred to by the Deputy should contact the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland who is responsible for the development and implementation of the Framework. Any questions regarding the level of learning or recognition of qualifications should be addressed to www.nfq.ie.
