To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources if a new post code system should be based on numbers and two letters representing Ireland, as is the norm in other bilingual countries; his views on whether the letters used should be IE , for example, Ireland/Éire, as this abbreviation is already in widespread use especially in the world of computing and marketing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The final tender for a National Postcode System issued recently. Subject to satisfactory conclusion of the procurement process it is intended to award a contract for a National Postcode System in the autumn of this year. The structure of the postcode will depend on the outcome of the procurement.
