The Department's records show that 3903 licences have been issued to road hauliers operators in the State for 2013.  For the preceding five years, the figures are as follows: 4,014 in 2012; 4,428 in 2011; 4,788 in 2010; 5,298 in 2009; and 5,474 in 2008.  In the licence application process, no distinction is made between those applicants applying for a licence for the first time and those who are renewing their licence, and details of the number of companies that applied for first time in each year are not available.  The Department is not in a position to provide details of the total annual number of liquidations in the road haulage sector.
