The improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads is the statutory responsibility of each local authority, in accordance with the provisions of Section 13 of the Roads Act 1993. Works on those roads are funded from local authorities own resources supplemented by State road grants.  The initial selection and prioritisation of works to be funded is also a matter for the Council. I announced the 2013 regional and local road grants in January this year.  Local authorities are being provided with over €350 million for these roads this year.  From this allocation South Dublin County Council is being provided with over €4.7 million.

In July last year, local authorities were requested to submit Specific Grant applications for 2013.  I am not aware of any application from South Dublin County Council for a traffic calming scheme on the Whitehall Road  under this scheme of grants. I will announce the 2014 regional and local road grant allocations early next year.
