The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists basking shark as an endangered species. The European Commission therefore prohibit EU vessels to fish for, to retain on board, to tranship or to land basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus ). This is given effect by Article 12 of COUNCIL REGULATION (EU) No 39/2013.
