To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if there are any retired public sector workers from his Department, or any other part of the public sector, currently on his Department's payroll, for example, for sitting on a committee or preparing a report, but not exclusively these two areas; the number on the payroll; the cost to his Department; the services being delivered for this money; and the way that the positions were originally advertised. There is one retired civil servant on the payroll of my Department. The Department has reengaged a former Principal Officer of this Department in connection with the preparation and attendance at the State’s defence of High Court proceedings that are due to come to court hearing in 2013.  The individual is being paid a 'per diem' rate of €260 under the pension abatement principle.  The position was not advertised as the officer was appointed specifically for his extensive knowledge and involvement in the development of the legislative regime relating to the regulation of the area subject to challenge in the case.
