408. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht if consideration will be given to including the 800th anniversary of the introduction of the Magna Carta Hiberniae, Great Irish Charter, which was the Irish, and only other variation, of the Magna Carta in the Decade of Commemorations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The special programme being developed with regard to the Decade of Commemorations relates only to the centenary anniversaries occurring in the period 1912-1922.
Reflecting the profound historic significance of the events of 1916, the national commemorative arrangements in 2016 will be organised towards a comprehensive exploration of the political, social and cultural experience of Ireland at the time.
The Great Charter of Ireland (Magna Carta Hiberniae) which issued on 12 November 1216 is of historic importance. I would welcome a commemorative initiative in this regard brought forward by an academic, legal institution or cultural institution.
