To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the reason passenger numbers at Shannon Airport fell from 3.6 million in 2007 to 1.5 million in 2012 notwithstanding the substantial State supports to the airport over this period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [56925/12]

The fall in passenger numbers at Shannon Airport in the period in question has been attributed to the general economic decline, which has of course affected all airports to various degrees, and to the substantial withdrawal of air services from the airport by a major airline. The State provides no Exchequer support to Shannon or the other two State Airports at Dublin and Cork.
