To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will provide an update in the motorway maintenance and renewals contract put out to tender by the National Roads Authority in April 2012; when the successful companies will be announced; the number of companies that will be given contracts under the tender; if successful companies employ sub contractors to carry out works; if companies erect tolls on roads they are maintaining; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for overall policy and funding in relation to the roads programme. The implementation of individual national road projects, including maintenance, is a matter for the National Roads Authority (NRA) under the Roads Act, 1993 in conjunction with the local authorities concerned. Noting the above position, I have referred the Deputy’s question to the NRA for direct reply. Please advise my private office if you don’t receive a reply within 10 working days.
