To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if a secondary school (details supplied) in County Mayo will qualify for funding towards the provision of night classes in adult literacy and numeracy; if he will outline the application process involved; the level of funding available to participants on the course; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the Adult Literacy and Community Education Scheme (ALCES) and the Back to Education Initiative (BTEI), my Department provides annual grants to Vocational Education Committees (VECs) for programmes in basic education, including adult literacy and numeracy classes. These programmes are aimed at adults with less than upper second level education and a range of target groups within them, including Travellers. It is a matter for each VEC to decide the nature, extent and organisation of courses provided within its budget allocation under the ALCES and BTEI programmes. The school in question should contact County Mayo VEC in relation to its proposal.
