Ambulance Service Provision

To ask the Minister for Health the reason the new Air Ambulance is to be located at Baldonnel Aerodrome, Dublin, rather than at Athlone which is geographically closer to the centre of Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [37053/12]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 1514 and 1539 together.

The Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) pilot scheme, which supports the work of the emergency ambulance service, commenced on 4th June 2012 and currently operates from Custume Barracks, Athlone.
