The total gross budget for long-term residential care in 2012 is €994.7m. This is effectively the budget for the Nursing Homes Support Scheme albeit that pre-Nursing Homes Support Scheme arrangements must also be facilitated from within the subhead, i.e. people in contract beds, people who choose to remain on subvention and people who were in public nursing homes prior to the commencement of the Scheme.

The breakdown of the 21,672 people is as follows:

CategoryNo of People
Public Nursing Homes (people who have been there since before the Nursing Homes Support Scheme commenced)3,266
Public Nursing Homes (Nursing Homes Support Scheme)1,898
Section 39 Nursing Homes (i.e. nursing homes which received funding for long-term residential care under section 39 of the Health Act 2004 prior to the commencement of the Nursing Homes Support Scheme) (people who have been there since before the Nursing Homes Support Scheme commenced)147
Section 39 Nursing Homes (Nursing Homes Support Scheme)253
Subvention1,093
Contract Beds1,647
Private Nursing Homes13,368

Finally, I have referred the portion of the question relating to the projected costs of public and private provision in 2012 to the HSE for direct reply to the Deputy.
