Question 235: To ask the Minister for Finance the tax break, if any, available to a person who pays a lump sum on their mortgage, is there any such relief; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28127/12]

The position is that, while there is tax relief available on interest paid on certain qualifying homes loans, there is no tax relief available on either normal periodic capital repayments or on lump sum capital repayments that are set against the balance outstanding on a mortgage.
