The recent review of the medical card operation conducted by the HSE indicated that there is significant scope for the simplification and standardisation of the assessment process, while providing appropriate levels of control.

The new self-assessment process which is streamlined and user friendly has already been implemented for many clients with lifelong illnesses. In addition the HSE is putting further processes in place which will immediately identify medical card applicants with particular lifelong or long term medical conditions. The aim of this process is to ensure that the review process around renewal of the medical card is streamlined for such clients to be as patient friendly, and only as frequent, as is necessary. I am confident that these initiatives will alleviate some of the concerns raised by patients with lifelong illnesses.
