Question 674: To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the reason renewal driving licences are being returned to applicants with less driving categories licensed then they qualified for in the previous licence that was surrendered; the steps they should take to correct this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Driving licence applications, including applications for renewals, are processed by the Motor Taxation Offices (MTOs) of the local authorities. When an individual is renewing a driving licence they normally receive a new licence for the same categories as those covered by their previous licence. If they do not, it may be because, when filling out the form for renewal of a licence, they have omitted to tick all of the categories they previously had. Alternatively, it is possible that an error may have been made in processing the form. In either case, I would advise the individual to contact their MTO and find out why in their case they did not get all of the categories they previously held.
