The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the provision of firearms for Garda personnel. In that context I have sought information from the Garda authorities in relation to the matters raised in this Question and I will communicate with the Deputy when I receive the relevant response.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are established procedures within An Garda Síochána regarding the selection of firearms. These procedures include the technical and operational evaluation of the firearms. In relation to the purchase of firearms the position is that contracts are dealt with in accordance with the relevant procurement requirements which include advertising in the Official Journal of the European Union.
