The Russian Navy accepted responsibility for the oil spill in relation to the Admiral Kuznetsov incident in February 2009. Although there is no legal mechanism to require payment a request was made through the Department of Foreign Affairs to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in July 2009 to recover costs totalling €155,166.04. Although there have been discussions followed between the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Russian Embassy no payment has been received to date.
