The total number of persons deported or removed from the State in accordance with the enforcement of our immigration legislation for the years in question was 21,666. These figures include persons who were returned to where they came from having been refused permission to enter the State at airports and ports of entry, persons transferred to another EU state under the Dublin II Regulation and those removed from the State having failed in their applications for asylum or otherwise having been in contravention of the Immigration Acts and EU Free Movement regulations.
