Question 219: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the Government agency or Department responsible for the retention and archiving of post mortem reports and coroners reports; the regulation in law for the retention of such records by that Government agency; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the Coroners Act, 1962, coroners are independent office holders with responsibility under the law for the medicolegal investigation of the circumstances of sudden, unexplained, violent and unnatural deaths. They are required under the Coroners Act 1962 (section 29) to retain relevant records of an inquest, including post-mortem examination reports, and to transfer the records to the County Registrar on vacating office.
