Question 221: To ask the Minister for Health if he will consider the appointment of a national figure to lead the implementation of a national campaign and strategy on obesity, in a similar way to the effective campaign that has been conducted by the Road Safety Authority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In order to combat the health risks posed by obesity, the Minister for Health, in 2011, established a Special Action Group on Obesity which is a cross Departmental group chaired by the Department of Health and comprising representatives from the Department of Education and Skills, the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, the Health Service Executive, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland & Safe Food to examine and progress a number of issues to address the complex and multifactoral problem obesity. A range of measures relating to healthier eating and the promotion of physical activity are being progressed.
