The Programme for Government contains a commitment to expand the Health Information and Quality Authority's (HIQA) inspection role into the area of residential services for people with disabilities along with a commitment to establish a Patient Safety Authority which will incorporate HIQA. Discussions are ongoing between my Department and HIQA to progress these commitments. At this time there are no plans to extend the remit of HIQA to sheltered housing for the disabled and the elderly.
