The Marine Institute advises that Spurdog is a long lived, slow growing and late maturing species and is, therefore, particularly vulnerable to exploitation. The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) scientific advice is that the stock of spurdog is depleted and that there should be no targeted fishery for this species and that catches in mixed fisheries should be reduced to the lowest possible level. On the basis of this advice the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) was set as zero for 2011 in Council Regulation (EU) No 57/2011 of 18 January 2011 and there is a zero TAC set also for 2012. On that basis, vessels of the EU fishing fleet may not land spurdog and the EU Council Regulation directs that catches of this species shall be promptly released unharmed to the extent practicable.
