Question 109: To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht when the top two floors of the Natural History Museum will be reopened, in view of the fact that they have been closed for four years for the publicised intention of installing safety barriers and a fire escape; and if a plan exists to expedite delivery of these health and safety measures; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department requested the Office of Public Works to examine the feasibility of a more limited development at the Natural History Museum which, at minimum cost, would provide safe access to and circulation around the upper balconies through a new enclosed lift and stairs at the southern end of the building. The examination has been completed and a report has been prepared. In view of the current economic climate it is not possible to state when funding will become available for the works.
