Question 88: To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation if his attention has been drawn to the fact that 93 industrial and provident societies have failed consecutively for the past five years to submit annual returns to the Registry of Friendly Societies; if his further attention has been drawn to the fact that the non-filing of annual returns constitutes an offence under the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts; the number of such societies the Registrar has cancelled in the past ten years for failure to file annual returns; the names of the societies, if any; the period of time they failed to submit annual returns before they were cancelled; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am aware of the issues raised by the Deputy as mentioned in previous replies on the matter, particularly the response dated 25 October. In addition, I made a statement on the issue in response to the Deputy yesterday.
A total of 285 societies have been cancelled in the past ten years for failure to file annual returns. Details of each were published in Iris Oifigiúil at the time. The figures and details regarding cancelled societies are also contained in the annual report of the Registrar of Friendly Societies each year.
It is open to the Deputy to make enquiries to the Registry of Friendly Societies regarding any individual named society.
