The breakdown of staff numbers as whole-time equivalents (WTE) in the former Department of Transport for the years 2008, 2009 and 2010 together with the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport number at 31 October 2011 are set out in the following table. The Department of Transport staff numbers increased in 2008 as a result of the transfer of functions inwards from the former Department of Environment. There were substantial staff reductions in 2009 and 2010 due primarily to incentivised early retirements, incentivised career break schemes and latterly due to staff redeployment to other Departments. The figure shown below for October 2011 includes 43.25 WTE which transferred into the Department as a result of the creation of the new Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport - the underlying trend of reducing numbers continues due to staff redeployments and retirements.
