Total expenditure on the Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS) comes to just over €358 million over the years 2005 to the end of October 2011. By the end of October 2011 local authorities had transferred a total of 36,579 households from Rent Supplement. Of these, 21,173 were housed directly under RAS and a further 15,406 were accommodated under other social housing options.

To the end of October 2011, a total 2,280 units are being leased under the Social Housing Leasing Initiative. Units can be leased directly by local authorities or through a voluntary housing body. A further 2,045 units have been sourced and approved for leasing.

A breakdown of the 4,325 units according to their current status is set out in the following table. Projects are deemed operational when, following approval by the Department, all agreements have been signed and the local authority or the approved housing body, as the case may be, commences the process of allocating properties to tenants.

The full year cost of the number of units operational at the end of October 2011 is just under €14 million.
