Policy in relation to the regional harbours, operating under the Harbours Act 1946, published in the Government's Ports Policy Statement in 2005, is that the continued operation of these harbours under the outdated provisions of the Harbours Act 1946 is unsustainable on the grounds of good governance and that most of these harbours would best achieve their potential through their transfer to local authority ownership.

The Department administers capital grant payments to these regional harbours in respect of priority remedial works to protect the fabric of the Harbours and to facilitate their transfer to local control.

Baltimore Harbour harbour will transfer to Cork County Council on the 1 January 2012. My Department has indicated to Cork County Council that it is planning to provide funding of €2.5m for remedial works at the harbour over the 2 year period 2012-2013.
