Question 755: To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the number of quangos, agencies and authorities that were established by his Department in each of the years from 1997 to January 2011; the number of staff employed by his Department in 1997; the number of staff employed by his Department in January 2011; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Since my appointment as Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport on 9 March 2011, I have established no State agencies, quasi-agencies or authorities. My Department was not in existence prior to that date. In that context, it is not possible to give meaningful comparative staffing figures as requested by the Deputy.

With regard to future developments, I am working on a proposal to rationalise agencies and offices under my Department's remit. This includes the merger of the NRA and RPA into a single body, and the merger of the Air Accident Investigation Unit, the Marine Casualty Investigation Board and the Railway Safety Commission.
