Question 181: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government his plans for land purchased by him from an organisation (details supplied); if it is possible for Leitrim County Council to use this land to build social housing, in view of the fact that the council is not in ownership of any building land in this area and the need for such housing is in great demand. The site in question was acquired by the Sue Ryder Housing Association for the purpose of developing 33 units of sheltered housing for older people under the terms of my Department's funding schemes for voluntary and co-operative housing. To date, some €468,711 has been paid by my Department in respect of site costs and planning and design fees. It was decided to defer the construction stage of this project due to the current budgetary situation and the existing high level of capital commitments under the voluntary housing funding schemes. While there are no proposals at this time to develop this site for standard social housing units, this may be an option at some time in the future.
