Question 150: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the cost of temporary control barriers erected around a location (details supplied) for the recent State visits; the reason for erecting them in view of the fact that there was already a permanent barrier at this location; the cost of their erection; the Department that bore the cost; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The barriers to which the Deputy refers were erected as part of the security arrangements put in place in relation to the two recent state visits. The Deputy will appreciate that for obvious reasons it is not the practice and it would not be in the public interest to comment in any detail on matters related to the security of visiting heads of state. However, I am satisfied that the necessary and appropriate measures were in place to ensure safety and security during the recent state visits.

With regard to the cost of the barriers, I am informed by the Garda authorities that a breakdown of the costs by specific locations is not available. The overall costs incurred by the Garda authorities in putting in place the necessary and appropriate security arrangements for the state visits will be borne by the Garda Síochána.
