Question 156: To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the number of mature students in receipt of the full rate of the higher education grant for the 2010-11 academic year; the number of those students who will complete their courses in the 2010-2011 academic year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The annual statistical returns for the 2010/11 academic year, which are made to my Department by the 66 grant awarding authorities, are not due to be filed until later in the Summer. However, without prejudice to the content of those returns and based on previous trends, it is estimated that some 30% of the student grant cohort is likely to be in the mature student category. This would equate to some 21,600 students, all of whom would be in receipt of the non-adjacent rate of grant currently. Statistical information is not collated on the number of mature students in each year of study.
