Question 254: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality, further to Parliamentary Question No. 259 of 24 May 2011, his plans to ensure that detailed updates are made available by the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service on individual cases, including details of the current status of the application; the projected timeframe for decision on the next stage of the process or on the conclusion of the process; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As I outlined in response to Question No. 69 of 7 April last, I have initiated steps within my Department to provide for speedier processing of applications for citizenship to bring about a substantial reduction in the processing timescale. These new arrangements will be publicly announced once my Department is in a position to implement them. The granting of Irish citizenship through naturalisation is a privilege and an honour which confers certain rights and entitlements not only within the State but also at European Union level and it is important that appropriate procedures are in place to preserve the integrity of the process.
