Question 140: To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality his plans to amend the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956 to allow periods of residency in the Six Counties to be considered as part of reckonable residency for naturalisation purposes, in keeping with the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956, as amended, sets out the law governing citizenship of Ireland. The Act distinguishes between the right to citizenship by birth and descent and the acquisition of citizenship through the naturalisation process. The provisions of the Act have been amended with due regard to the Good Friday Agreement and I have no plans to further amend the Act.
