Question 255: To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources if there is any legislation in place that governs the use of ".ie" domains in other countries; if any person in any part of the world can purchase a .ie domain and operate a business from that domain; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Irish legislation only has force of law in Ireland. Relevant EU legislation governs e-commerce within EU Member States. The registration of ".ie" country code top-level domain names can currently only take place through the ".ie" domain registry and its registrars. The ".ie" domain registry is the registry for ".ie" domain names and maintains the database of ".ie" registered domain names. Registration policy for ".ie" domain names is set out on the ".ie" domain registry website, www.domainregistry.ie, which states that all applicants applying for an ".ie" domain name who are not situated in the island of Ireland must demonstrate a real and substantive connection with Ireland, with the exception of those applying by means of Community Trademark.
