A levy on waste disposed of at landfills has been in place since 1 June 2002. Section 73 of the Waste Management Act 1996, as inserted by section 11 of the Waste Management (Amendment) Act 2001, allowed for the introduction of the landfill levy by regulations and the Waste Management (Landfill Levy) Regulations 2002 came into operation on 1 June 2002. The current landfill levy rate is €30 per tonne.
Under the Waste Management Acts 1996 to 2010, operational matters, such as charges to be set at local authority landfill sites, are a matter for the local authorities concerned.
