Department of Finance
Question 107: To ask the Minister for Finance the number of persons in Waterford city and county who were prosecuted for non-payment of value added tax in each of the past five years and to date in 2010; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [46874/10]
I draw to the Deputy's attention that this is a matter for the Revenue Commissioners. However, I am advised by Revenue that the number of cases in Waterford city and county prosecuted for non-filing of value added tax returns in each of the past five years and to date in 2010 is as follows.
|Year||Number of Cases|
|2010 (to date)||5|
In this context it should however be noted that the main focus of Revenue's response to non-payment of VAT – and indeed other taxes and duties – is through debt collection and recovery measures involving, inter alia, referral of debt cases to the sheriff, referral of debt cases to one of its contracted external firms of solicitors for the institution of legal proceedings in the Courts or attachment of debts owed by third parties to a defaulting taxpayer.
