Question 148: To ask the Minister for Finance the number of moneylending licences currently on record; the number of new licences granted each year from 2008 to date in 2010; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [34315/10]

The Financial Regulator has advised me that the number of licences granted each year from 2008 to end August 2010 is as follows:- No of licensed moneylenders 2008 52 2009 52 2010 51 (as at 31 August 2010) The Deputy might wish to note that money lending licences must be renewed annually and that the number of valid licences at a particular time does not vary significantly. This is because the number of new licensees is generally equivalent to the number who cease operating as money lenders.
