The purpose of the current competition is to establish a panel of approved candidates who will be available to meet future Garda recruitment needs. This forward planning is necessary given the lead time involved both in establishing such a panel and in training recruits to the point of attestation. I have requested the information on costs sought by the Deputy from the Garda Commissioner. I will write to the Deputy directly when this information is to hand.
