Question 111: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if her attention has been drawn to the existence of a group of influential persons who were advising the Health Service Executive south on the reconfiguration of services; the status of this group and the extent to which its views determine the delivery of services to the users of the public health services; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I am aware that in order to support the reconfiguration of acute hospitals in Cork and Kerry, a non-executive advisory board was established by the HSE in September 2009. The board has 17 members, drawn from business, education and healthcare fields. Its purpose is to support and advise the HSE as appropriate in relation to the reconfiguration of acute hospital services in the region and to bring practical experience to bear from outside the health field. The advisory board members receive no remuneration for their participation and give their time and advice voluntarily. The board is purely advisory, and has no executive or decision-making functions.

I welcome the fact that senior people from a range of disciplines are willing to offer a fresh perspective on important issues in health care. The HSE indicates that the membership of the advisory board is as follows.

Mr Micheal O'Flynn - Chairman Board Member of the Children's Medical & Research Foundation, Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin Chairman of the Cork Friends of Crumlin
