Question 200: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if the money paid for road tax via the motor tax website is returned to the local authority in which the person resides; the amount of money collected via this website for 2008 and 2009; the amount returned to each local authority in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The proceeds of motor tax are paid into the Local Government Fund, which was established by the Local Government Act 1998. The Exchequer also contributes to the Local Government Fund. Payments made from the Fund include recoupments to the Department of Transport in respect of vehicle and driver licensing administration, expenditure on regional and local roads, and annual General Purpose Grant allocations to local authorities. Motor tax income derived from operation of the on-line system in 2008 and 2009 amounted to €387,568,684 and €428,982,755 respectively.
