Question 267: To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs the support he is providing to a group of Irish citizens (details supplied) who invested in a French lease back scheme that has ended up costing them thousands of euro and who are now planning to take the matter to the French courts in view of the fact that they believe the management company has been fraudulent; and if he will make a statement on the matter. While my Department is not aware of this particular case, a number of other cases which have occurred in the context of the French leaseback system have been brought to the attention of the Embassy in Paris. The Deputy will be aware that the role of the Department of Foreign Affairs concerning private property transactions by Irish nationals abroad is limited, and that redress in such cases must be sought through the French legal system. I have asked officials in my Department to make contact with the group to explore if there is any assistance which can be provided, for example, the Embassy could provide a list of English-speaking lawyers in the area, if that were considered useful.
