Question 104: To ask the Minister for Finance the details of correspondence and other communications between his Department, the Office of Public Works and Cork County Council in connection with flooding at a location (details supplied) in County Cork; if a formal application was received from Cork County Council for funding under the minor flood relief works scheme to alleviate flooding at this location; if funding will be available for these works in 2010; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Office of Public Works (OPW) received representations from Cork County Council in 2005 in relation to flooding in the Ballingeary / Inchigeela area. Following consultations with the National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, the OPW carried out substantial channel cleaning works downstream of Inchigeela in 2005 and 2006.

The draft Flood Risk Assessment and Management Plan for the Lee Catchment, which includes Ballingeary / Inchigeela, went to public consultation in February, and submissions that were received in relation to flood risk in the area are currently being reviewed.

It would be open to Cork County Council to submit an application for funding for mitigation measures at these locations under the OPW minor flood works scheme. If an application is submitted, it will be considered by OPW in the light of the review of submissions in relation to the draft Lee Catchment Plan and having regard to the overall availability of resources for flood risk management.
