Question 17: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills if her attention has been drawn to the situation regarding the funding of Protestant schools, particularly in the Border area in view of the fact that much of this support has been removed; if she will assure this Deputy that consideration will be given to this situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I am familiar with the issues raised by some members of the Protestant community concerning issues relating to Protestant fee-charging schools.
I wish to assure the Deputy that I am committed to supporting Protestant education, while at the same time ensuring that funding arrangements for schools under Protestant management are in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.
Officials from my Department have been holding discussions with representatives of the Protestant community. I am committed to continuing this engagement, as I believe that these issues are best resolved collaboratively.
