Question 72: To ask the Minister for Transport if he will report on the first project under the smarter travel demonstration fund that was recently launched in Dundalk, County Louth; the amount of funding that was allocated for this project; the number of other projects that have been approved under this fund; when they will come on stream; the costs involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Funding of €805,000 over a 3-year period has been agreed for this project, which aims to encourage more sustainable transport choices in Dundalk, in particular in relation to travel to and from school. The project encompasses both hard measures such as the provision of traffic calming infrastructure, and soft measures such as cycle training, and a behavioural change campaign.

The Dundalk project was one of 35 projects short-listed in the Smarter Travel Project Fund competition, to which I hope to be in a position to allocate €15 million over 5 years. I expect to announce more details of all funded projects in the coming weeks.
