The Deputy will be aware that the Communications (Retention of Data) Bill 2009 is currently awaiting Second Stage in Seanad Éireann having completed all stages in this House. The Bill transposes the Directive to which the Deputy refers and, once enacted, it will provide the basis for an annual statistical report to the European Commission related to data retention. I hope that it will be possible to conclude the remaining stages of the Bill in the coming weeks.
My Department has been in contact with the European Commission in the context of the evaluation of the Directive which is being carried out at present.
