Question 129: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the strong community campaign to have Tallaght, Dublin, designated as a city; his views on the importance of such designation for the third largest population centre in this State; the process to be followed in this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the Local Government Act 2001 there are 29 county councils, including South Dublin County Council, and 5 city councils, each of which is responsible for the full range of local authority functions in their respective areas.

The general issue of local government structures will be addressed in the White Paper on Local Government. The approach to the White Paper is currently under consideration by Government; however I have no plans to re-designate South Dublin County Council as a city council, or to establish Tallaght as a separate city authority.
