Relevant recommendations contained in the Report of the Ombudsman on Waste Waiver Schemes Administered by Local Authorities are being considered in the context of the overall review of waste management policy, provided for in the Programme for Government, which is now at an advanced stage. To underpin this review consultants were appointed to undertake a study of the waste management sector in Ireland, based on best practice internationally, to cover a wide range of issues, having regard to the current regulatory arrangements, from both an environmental and socioeconomic standpoint. The report was delivered late last year, and it is my intention to prepare a draft waste management policy statement, for public consultation, drawing on the recommendations of the report.
